Who are we?

“Dones per la Llibertat i Democràcia” (Women for Freedom and Democracy) was founded in Barcelona in 1999.

The Association’s activities are inspired by the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Dones per la Llibertat i Democràcia applies these principles, on which the Convention for the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is also based.

The President, Joaquima Alemany Roca,  works together with the Executive Board, comprised of women politicians, entrepreneurs and executives from Catalonia, Spain and the Mediterranean area.

Dones per la Llibertat i Democràcia belongs to the Council of Women of Catalonia (CNDC), is a member of the European Women’s Lobby and holds special consultative status at the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations. Since its foundation, the Association has formed part of the International Network of Liberal Women (INLW) of which Mrs Joaquima Alemany is also  President.

The International Network of Liberal Women (INLW) has joined Liberal International as a full member and within its action framework are concepts such as:

  • Defense of the freedom and Human Rights of Women.
  • Equal representation of men and women in politics.
  • Elimination of all forms of gender discrimination.

At the IL International Congresses, the women’s group has been responsible for the presentation of resolutions on the following subjects:

  • Prostitution: new forms of slavery
  • Current status of widows
  • Water security in the 21st Century
  • Manifesto as contribution of women to “good governance”.
  • Arranged marriages
  • Women and development 
  • Women in Afghanistan 
  • Women in Iraq 
  • Women, migration, population and demographic change
